Neighbour's thatch house

We have an Antebellum house near by, it has shuttered windows, and wood shake roofs, wich was the preferred roofing material here in the Ozarks for a long time. Sitting out by the shed with a froe and mallet, splitting shingles, used to be a common farm chore, The only question is why do traditional materials like thatch and wood shingles, slate roofs, and clay tile roofs look so "right" and attractive, and manmade materias, like aphsalt shingles look so ugly? Our ancestors were often illiterate, yet the things they built, look better than todays junk does.
