Thanks for posting this - I was struck by his comments about the Irish famine - he was right - one would think having gone through such an experience Ireland would be at the forefront of secure food - not so though.

It is surprising, since the Famine -- with a deserved capital F --- looms over the Irish like the Holocaust over Jewish culture, if that's not too presumptuous an analogy. At the same time, I don't find Ireland to be any less secure than most Western countries, and are more conscious of the threat.

Also, Irish organisations have been leaders in dealing with hunger. Irish charities like Trocaire and Afri distribute food in the Third World. Irish groups like FEASTA, Cultivate, my group FADA, Transition Towns, Seed Savers and others focus on post-peak food security. Part of me suspects that deep down, the Irish never forgot.
